How To Plan Your Life. Design Your Future Using A Proven Process

How To Plan Your Life

Do you have a bucket list? Is the idea of a bucket list one that energizes you? Or, were you made to feel guilty for even considering the idea of a bucket list? Many people live such a day-to-day existence that they can’t imagine the idea of having a bucket list. Additionally, many are told they could do or be anything they wanted in life. Neither of these extremes are healthy.

How To Create A Bucket List

The idea that we are to live a meager existence free from our own pleasure is popular among some of my clients seeking a Life Plan. They were taught from early in life that the idea of pursuing wealth was something that was selfish. Most of these clients have a Christian worldview. They were taught they should attempt to live like Jesus as much as possible. After all, Jesus said, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew 8.20) This attitude turns into a work. They forget the idea that they love to see their own children play. If parents love to see their kids play, why wouldn’t God love to see his kids play? Or enjoy his creation? To be clear, I am not saying these people should love the creation more than they love the Creator!

Those who were told they could do anything they wanted in life were also deceived. I know a nuclear engineer. He is really smart! The majority of the population don’t share is IQ. There are many ways to understand one’s giftedness. This is one action that occurs in a Life Plan.

What Is On Your Bucket List?

I ask clients this question a lot, “What do you want to do before you turn room temperature?” Of course, the question is what do you want to do before you die? The first thing you should understand is you can’t do anything you want! And, you should enjoy life. The nest thing you do is dream. One approach that I use in Life Planning is to establish to primary areas of your life. For example, Faith/Health, Work, Love and Play. From this ask these questions:

  1. What areas have you found your deepest pesonal satisfaction?
  2. Where were you recognized for your performance?
  3. Where do you find meaning in work?
  4. What are your core values and how do they contribute?
  5. Describe your natural abilities
  6. What work do you find at the intersection of natural ability and core values?

Why Is It Called A Bucket List?

As you can see from the previous 6 questions, your bucket list isn’t all about play! This is one of the things that is helpful for people who think they shouldn’t have a bucket list. Perhaps, it is the definition that causes people a misstep. Consequently, your bucket list should include fining your true meaning in life. It should describe your ultimate contribution. And, it should also include the people you you want to hang out with. But, it should include elements of play!

What Does A Bucket List Mean?

In my own life I have described four domains of life by using music. My four domains:

  1. New Year’s Day (Love)
  2. Spirit In The Sky (Faith)
  3. Landslide (Work)
  4. The Andy Griffith Show (Play)

Try whistling the theme song from The Andy Griffith Show without smiling. (This assumes you know the show) If not, check this out
